The short answer

A Googlebook is a laptop that runs Googlebook OS and meets Google's hardware standard. Google makes the software and sets the specification, while partner manufacturers build the machines, much as they did with Chromebooks. Google announced the Googlebook category on 12 May 2026 and opened pre-orders on 21 September 2026.

Googlebook OS is built on the Android technology stack and borrows the desktop foundations of ChromeOS, including the full Chrome browser with extensions. Android apps from Google Play run on Googlebook OS natively, rather than inside the virtual machine that Chromebooks use. Gemini features such as Magic Pointer and Rambler are built into the system.

Aluminium OS was Google's codename for Googlebook OS during development, and you'll also see it written as Aluminum OS, ALOS or GooglebookOS. All of these names refer to the same software, which ships as Googlebook OS.

What Googlebook OS is

Googlebook OS puts Android at the centre of a laptop operating system, then adds the desktop browser and security model that made ChromeOS work.

On a Chromebook, Android apps run inside a virtual machine layered on top of ChromeOS, which is why they often handled windows, keyboards and mice awkwardly. On a Googlebook, Android is the operating system, so apps from Google Play run natively. Google pairs that Android core with the multi-window performance and full desktop Chrome browser of ChromeOS, including Chrome extensions.

The Googlebook OS desktop follows Google's Material 3 Expressive design. Quick Settings and notifications sit in the top-right corner, and apps live in a centred dock at the bottom of the screen, according to 9to5Google's hands-on. The Files app shows documents and photos from a connected Android phone next to local files, and smart file search finds files by what's in them.

Googlebook OS updates install automatically in the background and bring regular feature drops. Google commits to Googlebook OS updates for up to 10 years.

Magic Pointer

Wiggle the cursor to bring up Gemini, then select anything on screen to ask about it, compare it or create something from it. Google's examples include turning a training plan on a web page into Google Calendar events and checking whether an email is spam.

Rambler

Rambler turns spoken rambling into clean text. It removes filler words, sorts action items into bullet points and copes with switching languages mid-sentence.

Create My Widget

Describe a widget in plain language, such as a sports score tracker or a countdown to a trip, and Googlebook OS builds it for your desktop. No coding is needed.

Linux and Antigravity

Every Googlebook includes Google Antigravity for building apps with AI agents, plus a full Linux terminal that runs developer tools such as Claude Code and the Antigravity CLI.

Google also lists proactive suggestions based on what's on screen, Gemini Live voice conversations, and a Gemini agent that keeps working on tasks with the lid closed. Google says Magic Pointer and Rambler are available to users aged 18 and over in select countries and languages.

Compare the five Googlebooks

Every launch Googlebook in Google's US store has 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, a touchscreen, a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader. Sort the lineup, filter by processor, and pick up to three to compare side by side.

    What runs on a Googlebook

Googlebook OS runs Android apps from Google Play and web apps in Chrome. It doesn't run Windows programs.

    Works on a Googlebook

    • Android apps from Google Play, with desktop-ready apps highlighted in the Play Store.
    • The full desktop Chrome browser, Chrome extensions and web apps.
    • The Microsoft 365 app for Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint files.
    • Creative apps including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Lightroom, CapCut, Canva, BandLab and Luminar.
    • Productivity apps including Notion, Notability, Microsoft Copilot, Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox and Fantastical.
    • Streaming apps including YouTube, Spotify, Netflix, HBO Max and Disney+.
    • Android games such as Clash Royale, and PC games such as Cyberpunk 2077 through NVIDIA GeForce NOW.

    Doesn't work

    • Windows .exe programs. Software that exists only for Windows needs a Windows PC or a cloud PC service.
    • iPhone features. Google lists phone features for Android phones only.
    • PC games that aren't on Google Play, unless you stream them through a service such as GeForce NOW.

Google's app list refers to the versions on Google Play, which can differ from the Windows and Mac editions of the same software. Availability varies, and some apps and games need a subscription.

    Updates, security and Linux

Google promises Googlebook OS updates and regular feature drops for up to 10 years, installed automatically in the background. Google's wording is "up to" 10 years, and Google hasn't published end dates for individual Googlebook models as of 22 September 2026.

Every Googlebook has a Google Titan security chip as its hardware root of trust. Google says Googlebook OS uses the same security architecture as ChromeOS, with on-device malware detection.

The Linux environment on Googlebook OS runs inside a pKVM-based hypervisor that keeps it isolated from the rest of the system, according to Google's launch briefing. Developers get full terminal access to run Linux tools, pull code repositories and run AI coding agents. Google Antigravity comes on every Googlebook and can deploy Android apps straight to the laptop.

From Google's Googlebook offer terms as of 22 September 2026. Ireland is a launch market but isn't covered by the offers.

    Is Googlebook coming to India?

Google hasn't announced a Googlebook launch date or price for India as of 22 September 2026. India isn't among Google's first launch markets, and Indian buyers aren't covered by the bundled offers. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo all sell laptops in India, but none has announced an Indian Googlebook yet. Converting the US price to rupees isn't a reliable guide, because Indian laptop prices include GST and local costs.

If you already own a Chromebook

Your Chromebook keeps working and keeps getting ChromeOS updates. Google says Chromebooks will continue alongside Googlebooks, and Chromebooks released from 2021 onwards get 10 years of automatic updates.

Google hasn't published a list of Chromebooks that can switch to Googlebook OS. Google's John Maletis has said not every device can migrate because of technical requirements, and that Google is working on a way for many newer devices to move over. Until Google names eligible models, any online list of upgradable Chromebooks is guesswork.

Check how long your Chromebook is supported

    1. Open Settings on your Chromebook.
    2. Select About ChromeOS.
    3. Select Additional details and look for the update schedule.

What is the difference between a Googlebook and a Chromebook?

A Googlebook runs Googlebook OS on premium hardware designed for Gemini, while a Chromebook runs ChromeOS and is built for simplicity and value. Android apps run natively on Googlebook OS but inside a virtual machine on ChromeOS. Googlebooks also add phone features such as Cast My Apps, Continue On and Quick Access. Google says Chromebooks will continue alongside Googlebooks.

Will my Chromebook get Googlebook OS?

Google hasn't named any Chromebook that can switch to Googlebook OS as of 22 September 2026. Google has said many newer Chromebooks should be able to migrate, but not every device will because of technical requirements. Your Chromebook keeps receiving ChromeOS updates either way.

Can a Googlebook run Windows programs?

No. Googlebook OS runs Android apps and web apps, not Windows .exe programs. Software that exists only for Windows needs a Windows PC or a cloud PC service.

Can I use Microsoft Office on a Googlebook?

Yes. The Microsoft 365 app on a Googlebook opens, edits and saves Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint files. Some features need a Microsoft 365 subscription.

    Does Googlebook OS support Linux?

Yes. Googlebook OS includes a full Linux terminal environment that is isolated from the rest of the system by a hypervisor. Google says it runs developer tools such as Claude Code and the Antigravity CLI, and Google Antigravity comes on every Googlebook.

Can I download Googlebook OS or install it on my PC?

No. Google hasn't released Googlebook OS for download or for installation on other computers as of 22 September 2026. Googlebook OS ships only on Googlebook laptops, so treat any Googlebook OS ISO or installer you find online as unofficial and potentially unsafe.

Does a Googlebook work with an iPhone?

A Googlebook works as a standalone laptop with any phone, but its phone features are built for Android. Cast My Apps, Continue On and Quick Access need an Android phone running Android 17 or later, and Google's Googlebook site lists no iPhone features.

How long will Googlebooks get updates?

Google promises Googlebook OS updates and regular feature drops for up to 10 years. Updates install automatically in the background. Google hasn't published end dates for individual Googlebook models yet.

What is Magic Pointer on a Googlebook?

Magic Pointer brings Gemini to the cursor on a Googlebook. Wiggle the pointer to activate it, then select text, images or anything else on screen to ask about it, compare it or create something from it. Google says Magic Pointer is available to users aged 18 and over in select countries and languages.

What is the Glowbar on a Googlebook?

The Glowbar is a light bar built into every Googlebook. It animates when the laptop starts up and shows battery level and charging status. Google is opening the Glowbar to developers so apps can use it for custom animations.

What does the G key do on a Googlebook?

The G key is a dedicated key on the Googlebook keyboard for one-touch searches, according to Google.

    Is Googlebook launching in India?

Google hasn't announced a Googlebook release date or price for India as of 22 September 2026. India isn't among the first launch markets, and the bundled Googlebook offers don't cover Indian buyers.

Can you play games on a Googlebook?

Yes. Googlebooks run Android games from Google Play, such as Clash Royale and Candy Crush, and stream PC games such as Counter-Strike 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Arc Raiders through NVIDIA GeForce NOW. Googlebooks include 12 months of GeForce NOW Fast Pass in eligible countries.

    Does Samsung make a Googlebook?

Samsung isn't one of the first Googlebook makers. Google lists Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo as the first-wave manufacturers.

Should I buy a Googlebook now or wait?

A Googlebook makes the most sense if you use an Android phone and Google's apps every day and don't rely on Windows-only software. If you need specific Windows programs, serious local gaming or an iPhone-centred setup, a Windows laptop or MacBook is still the better fit. Independent reviews of retail units should appear after the 4 October 2026 launch, which is worth waiting for if you're undecided.
